Prom and Graduation Parties are Coming, Remember Indiana’s Social Host Laws
At the time of year when high school seniors are preparing for prom and graduation, it also marks the most dangerous time of year for teen drivers involved in auto accidents. Drinking and driving continues to impact teenagers and their families, particularly during prom and graduation season. Some parents take the stance that it is better to throw a graduation party for their child and his or her friends at their own home, where the children can be supervised. In a study conducted by the American Medical Association and republished by MADD, it found: • 2 out of 3 teens said it was easy to get alcohol • 1 in 3 said they could get alcohol from their consenting parents • 2 out of 5 said they could easily get alcohol from a friend’s parent • 1 in 4 said they have been to parties where underage drinking was occurring in…

Talk to Teens About the Most Dangerous Driving Season
AAA has called the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day “The 100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. The end of the school year includes prom and graduation, and then the summer months of July and August are when the highest numbers of fatal teen car accidents of the year occur. They recommend parents hold a series of conversation with their children beginning when they are younger than driving age, and to talk to them about safe driving while demonstrating the techniques while they are in the car. Dennis Durbin, professor of pediatrics and specialist on teen auto accidents, began teaching his…

Workers Memorial Day Honored Victims of On-the-Job Deaths
Our national Memorial Day is this Monday, honoring our military men and women who died during their service to our country. Three weeks ago in Indiana, families of the victims of on-the-job fatal road and construction accidents gathered to honor their memory in a Workers Memorial Day. These men and women had their lives cut short while doing their jobs to build infrastructure and roads, something we all use and take for granted. The theme of the service held in Lafayette was “Safe Jobs, Save Lives, Keep the Promise Alive,” and families of the workers gathered to light candles and hear speeches and music. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics cited a study that showed 4,574 workers were killed in accidents across the U.S. in 2010, and between 50,000 and 60,000 died from occupational diseases. Frank Rosenthal, a professor of occupational and health science at Purdue, was a speaker at…
