WHO: Going to U.S. hospitals cause 100,000 deaths each year

When you go to the hospital, you expect to get better–not worse. But new research from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that’s often not the case, even in the developed world. Going into the hospital can help you get better, but it can also lead to some surprising problems, including infections and falls, that can lead to preventable deaths. Even more disturbing to Americans, the wrongful death rate from hospital acquired infections is even higher in the U.S. than it is in Europe. Liam Donaldson, the WHO’s envoy for patient safety, says that world-wide, a person’s chance of being a victim of a hospital error is nearly 1 in 10.  Even more shocking, that same person’s chance of dying due to a health care error is 1 in 300. Woman overcomes spinal cord injury to marry the love of her life

A woman in North Carolina was celebrating her bachelorette party, just days before her wedding. A friend playfully pushed her into a swimming pool, and in the blink of an eye, everything changed. In a freak accident, Rachelle Friedman’s head struck the bottom of the pool, permanently damaging the C6 vertebrae of her spinal cord, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. But this isn’t a sad story. This is a story about love. Just a year after her accident, Rachelle is finally getting her chance to marry the man of her dreams.
